About the project
WaterSmart deploys IoT sensors in drinking water networks of Alpine municipalities to detect leaks and contamination in real time and optimise distribution as droughts intensify.
The Alps have lost 30% of their glacier volume since 1900, threatening water supplies for millions of people. At the same time, 25% of drinking water distributed in Austria and Switzerland is lost through undetected leaks. WaterSmart installs a mesh of pressure, flow, and quality sensors directly into municipal pipelines, connected to a real-time cloud analytics platform. Our machine-learning algorithm locates leaks with 1.5-metre accuracy and predicts pipe-burst risk 72 hours in advance. Already operational in 8 Austrian municipalities with a 35% reduction in water loss. The €1M raise will fund deployment in 40 additional municipalities and the development of our water-resource forecasting module.
