DesertSolar — Floating Solar Farms for Desalination

Solar Energy • United Arab Emirates

About the project

DesertSolar develops floating solar farms on Gulf coastal lagoons to provide clean energy to desalination plants, reducing the cost of drinking water by 40% across GCC countries.

GCC countries produce 40% of the world's desalinated water but depend 95% on hydrocarbons to power their desalination plants, representing an annual cost of $4 billion and 28 million tonnes of CO2. DesertSolar has developed a floating bifacial solar panel technology specially designed for the Gulf marine environment: saltwater corrosion resistance, evaporative cooling improving output by 8%, and storm-resistant dynamic anchoring. Our first 5 MW pilot site on the Abu Dhabi lagoon powers a pilot reverse-osmosis desalination plant. Strategic partnership signed with ADWEC (Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Corp). The €12M raise will fund construction of a 50 MW commercial farm, deployment studies in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and the filing of 4 additional patents.
